Villa Container Fitou was born from recycled shipping containers: steel boxes designed to carry goods, turned into a contemporary, flat-roofed architect villa on the Mediterranean coast of the South of France.
From shipping container to villa
A shipping container is an extremely strong steel module, designed to be stacked and to withstand the sea. That is exactly what makes it a basis for architecture: a ready-made load-bearing structure that the architect assembles, cuts and opens up to create living spaces.
In Fitou, this gives:
- clean volumes and horizontal lines under a flat roof;
- large openings cut into the steel, facing the sea and the Corbieres;
- an open living area with an equipped kitchen facing the sunset;
- four bedrooms, 130 sqm, and a raised wooden terrace leading to the pool.
Luxury is what you take away
Container architecture imposes rigour: modules with fixed dimensions, straight lines, nothing superfluous. The villa makes it a design choice. Inside, you forget the steel: light, the view and warm materials take the lead.
Sustainable architecture
Reusing shipping containers gives a second life to steel that has already served, and means building with less new material. Solar panels will soon complete the approach.
See it from the inside
The best way to understand what a shipping container home allows is to sleep in one. The villa is rented directly, for 8 guests, with a pool heated all year round: a 2-night weekend is enough from November to March.
