The great sites of the Corbieres and the Aude
From the villa, each day is decided in the morning. The Cite of Carcassonne, Europe's largest fortified medieval city and a UNESCO site, is about an hour away. Fontfroide Abbey, a Cistercian abbey, is nestled in the Corbieres. In the village itself, the medieval castle of Fitou overlooks the rooftops, the vineyards and the lagoon. Just south, minutes away, the fortress of Salses, a huge 15th-century stronghold between the Corbieres and the lagoons, is one of the finest in France. In the hinterland, the Cathar castles, Queribus, Peyrepertuse and Aguilar, the vertigo citadels perched on their rocks, are there to explore from the villa. Narbonne, a Roman city with its gourmet market hall and cathedral, is about twenty minutes away. The Canal du Midi can be explored on foot or by boat, and Gruissan, with its stilt houses, keeps the Mediterranean spirit. The Corbieres trails, between vineyard huts and viewpoints over the lagoons, are good for walking in every season.

The villa, after the day out
Back home, a 130 sqm architect villa built from recycled containers: four bedrooms sleeping eight, an open living space with a fitted kitchen, a raised wooden terrace and the pool heated all year round, secured by a sliding terrace. The view stretches over the Corbieres on one side, and over the Leucate lagoon and the sea on the other. The beaches of Leucate and La Franqui are 15 minutes away, and Perpignan airport 25 minutes.
